Due to Covid-19 safety precautions, the usual in-person, hospital-based Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program was no longer viable. At Thomas Jefferson University, the program continued by transitioning to a variety of virtual AIR activities, e.g., a YouTube video channel, art-making packets for patients, and live workshops via Zoom.
AIR projects designed to serve patients are not novel, but each one is necessarily site-specific. In that sense, the project is shaped by the observations and input of clinical staff, who help design 'interventions' as they feel would best suit their patients based on their intimate knowledge of their health status and hospital culture.
